Puri Lukisan/Painting Museum

Panting Museum is located about 200 meters from Puri Saren / Ubud Palace and it is dissociated by dell, climb a piece of wide plain with beautiful view. It is situated in calm and peaceful area of Ubud Bali so that this place is an ideal place for who wish to see and enjoy result of art from all big actor like I Gusti Nyoman Lempad, Ida Bagus Nyana, Anak Agung Gde Sobrat, I Gusti Made Deblog, Rudof Bonnet, Walter Spies and more.

What to see?

This museum is opened in the year 1956 by minister of Education and Culture, Mr. Moh. Yamin. This museum is consisted of three special buildings in U-shape. In the middle of this museum is the courtyard and fishpond with the beautiful lotus flower. The building no 1 is a place for a permanent exhibition of puppets dressy or puppets style painting. This building is collecting the painting from I Gusti Nyoman Lempad and the clarification about the existence of Pita Maha Organization. The Building no. 2 is also a place for permanent exhibition or still from masterpiece result of all artist of Balinese modern dressy style. The Building no.3 is for a temporary exhibition.

There is only one museum is exist in Ubud Village that is Puri Lukisan Museum, but Ubud sub district area until the year of 2003 is built with 4 new painting museums those are: Puri Lukisan Museum, Neka Museum, Arma Museum and Rudana Museum

The Planning is happened in year 1910 with the elementary concept Bali Museum building structure that was solidarity of the structure between temple building (Sanctum) and Palace (Keraton).
  • After agreed on the concept of the museum building structure, hence founded a mains building which deflect finished in year 1925. Because of the ancient object collection which had been collected is not yet adequate and then during 7 years (1925-1932), the mains building stood functioned for the exhibition purpose. All meritorious experts in checking object taken as collection of Bali Museum for example: DR.W.F. Stutterheim, G.I. Graider, G.M. Hendrikss, DR.R. Goris, and artist of Walter Spies
  • Bali Museum in the beginning is handled by an institution that is called Bali Museum Institution and opened officially on 8 December 1932 with the name of Bali Museum
  • The management hereinafter by institution of Bali Museum has been reverted to Government of Indonesia since 5 January 1966.

Museum Puri Lukisan, Ubud

    Founded by Rudolf Bonnet and Cokorda Gde Agung Sukawati. The developing fine art style at the time was born by Pita Maha (1930s). This museum has a collection of 150 painting and 62 pieces of sculptures, however, has a valuable potent for the idea bequeathing the very aesthetic art and culture to the next generation. This is the first arts museum in Bali.

Museum Gedong Kirtya, Singaraja

Museum Seni Lukis Klasik, Klungkung

    The owner of this museum, Nyoman Gunarsa, exhibit his masterpiece works to complete the museum collection that documented the classical paintings of Bali. The museum is located in Banda village.

Museum Nyoman Rudana, Ubud

    This three storey museum in Mas village, takes Tri Angga conception, that is three parts of human body; head, body, and legs. The collection consist of some works of Balinese painters from the glory of Klungkung Kingdom until this very day.

Museum Agung Rai, Ubud

    With the concept of a “living museum”, the Museum Agung Rai displays paintings and provides a presentation stage for various stage art, it is a place for karawitan. The arts completed with library and book gallery, hotel, restaurant, cafe, and coffee shop. Standing in six hectares of land, the museum directly provides special Ubud views, with rice fields and trenches that become part of the museum.

Museum Manusia Purba, Gilimanuk

    Founded in 1990s, in the western end of Bali Island. It began with archaeological observation R.P. Soejoeno of Bali Archaeological Service. In 1962 in Dukuh Cekik which estimated that approximately 2000 years ago there lived a group of society from the stone age for 200 years in the area where the museum is located.
